Gwaramari Recipe | 4-Ingredient Crunchy Flitters

Gwaramari is a traditional Newari/Nepali food that is mainly famous for breakfast in Nepal mainly within the Newari community. Gwaramari means ‘a round bread’ in Newari. These crunchy flitters (gwaramari recipe) are made with only 4 ingredients easily available in your kitchen and provide the answer to how to make gwaramari Newari food at your home. These gwaramari are very soft inside while crunchy outside that you can enjoy them with a cup of tea.

Ingredients: (Makes 12 flitters)

All-purpose flour – 2 cups

Baking powder – 1 tbsp

Salt – 1/4 tsp

Sugar – 1 tbsp

Sunflower oil – 1 and a half cup

Warm water – 1 cup

Steps:
  1. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt and sugar to combine.
  2. Add warm water gradually to make a thick and smooth batter.
  3. Cover and let it sit for 4-5 hours or overnight at room temperature.
  4. Preheat a pan on high heat, add oil (flitters should submerge only half) 
  5. Once the oil is hot, reduce the heat to medium. Take some water to wet hand and make  a ball shape from the batter and place them in the hot oil. 
  6. Working in batches, repeat until the pan is half full. (It is okay if the flitters are joined together)
  7. Fry until light golden on each side (about 4-5 minutes on each side)
  8. Transfer to a paper towel . Serve with hot tea.
